The Oscars 2024 Red Carpet Review

My least favourite group of formal ceremonies, the “Oh no I forgot my bow tie club”. I still can’t comprehend why you would you go the length of wearing a dinner suit and then decide to not wear a bow tie. Would you eat an île flottante without the crème anglaise ? No, it wouldn’t float. Would you have sticky toffee pudding without the toffee? No, it wouldn’t be a sticky toffee pudding. Would you decide not to wear a bow tie for a black tie event? No, it wouldn’t be a black tie outfit, it’s in the title!!

Bradley Cooper
I’m not too sure what this outfit is, the blue buttons are distracting, the metal ones at the cuffs as well. It’s a shame considering the fit is very stylish. Change the buttons to covered buttons and please, please, please, wear a bow tie.

Ryan Gosling
I think Ryan missed an opportunity here to show that modern black tie can be done well. The suit itself is cool and fun – he’s Ken after all- with the silver/metallic detail on the edge of the jacket and the trouser outside seam. Switch that shirt for a white dinner shirt and add an appropriate bow tie to match the quirkiness of the outfit and who knows, he might have got himself an Oscar?

Mark Ruffalo
The most frustrating of the evening for me. Mark is a cool looking guy, absolutely nailed his dinner suit choice, his accessories were carefully selected (the red and silver really pop), he even has a pocket square and a covered placket shirt! Dubious choice of footwear but we’ll ignore that for now. The big question is, where is your bow tie? Where actually is it? He even closed the top button of his shirt. This is beyond me!!

Chris Hemsworth
Here is the proof that even if you have a big hammer, you will not be excused for not wearing a bow tie. Honestly, Chris looks incredibly handsome here, wearing a dark navy dinner suit, great choice to complement his blue eyes and complexion, I also like the turnback cuff details in black satin and the shawl lapel shape is lovely (although a bit narrow for his frame). The most important question still remains: WHERE IS HIS BOWTIE?!

Joseph Quinn
Another frustrating one, probably even less understandable. He’s wearing a perfectly fitting dinner suit, pleated dinner shirt, patent boots (🤔) and I can even spot a cummerbund. Why.. why would you decide to wear a cummerbund but not wear a bow tie? If you have an answer, please contact me.

Ncuti Gatwa
Another confusing one, very similar to above. Ncuti is wearing a lovely dinner suit -on the fashion side rather than traditional- with what appears to be a waistcoat, although I think it is a hybrid waistcoat/cummerbund, and a great shirt. I understand this is not your standard dinner suit and the no bow tie looks actually works aesthetically but I wish he would have worn something like a thin ribbon tied around his neck. Ncuti, if you read this..

Omar Rudberg
I won’t comment much on this one but if you’re not going to wear a bow tie, you might as well forget the shirt too.
